The Healing Power Within: Acknowledging Your Feelings

Do you ever feel like your emotions are an alpha wolf trying to take charge of your entire life?

Yeah, me too. As a true Enneagram 4, I live 98% of my life in my emotions.

I can't help it, I like (love) my feels.

But, I also know that deep down, we live in a society that typically values logic and reason over emotions.

Logic and reason are considered objective tools for decision-making, providing structured approaches based on evidence and facts. They are associated with efficiency, predictability, and stability.

Emotions, on the other hand, are seen as subjective and potentially disruptive. Feelings come across as unprofessional and irrational, and while they can be fleeting, I believe they shouldn't just be ignored.

They are simply trying to tell us something.

As I've gotten older, I've learned that instead of stuffing our emotions down, it's important for us to acknowledge and honor them, process them, and figure out what the heck they are trying say, because, let's be honest, we aren't robots.

We can't escape emotions.

By taking the time to embrace what we are feeling, we embark on a journey of self-discovery and authenticity, allowing us to become better humans:

  • Emotionally Aware: Instead of pushing our emotions aside or suppressing them, we create space to tune in and understand what we are experiencing. Emotional awareness allows us to recognize the subtle nuances of our feelings, identify their triggers, and gain a deeper understanding of ourselves. This self-awareness provides valuable insights into our needs, desires, and personal boundaries, fostering a stronger connection with our authentic selves.

  • Healthily Expressive: Rather than bottling up emotions, which can lead to increased stress and anxiety, we can find healthy outlets to communicate and release our feelings so they don't interfere with the areas of our lives that require logic and reason. This might involve talking to a trusted friend or therapist, engaging in creative activities like journaling or painting, or simply allowing ourselves to cry or scream when necessary.

  • In Community: When we are open and honest about our emotions, we foster trust, intimacy, and understanding in our interactions. Sharing our feelings allows others to empathize and support us, leading to deeper connections and more meaningful relationships. Additionally, by acknowledging our emotions, we can communicate our needs and boundaries effectively, ensuring healthier and more fulfilling relationships.

  • Resilient: By facing and processing difficult emotions, we develop the inner strength to navigate challenging situations with greater ease. Acknowledging our feelings allows us to learn from them, adapt, and grow through adversity. Emotional resilience enables us to bounce back from setbacks, maintain a positive mindset, and embrace life's ups and downs with courage and grace.

  • Authentic: Our emotions are an integral part of who we are, and by acknowledging them, we honor our truest selves. This self-acceptance paves the way for authentic self-expression and a greater sense of personal fulfillment. By allowing ourselves to feel and express a wide range of emotions, we tap into our creativity, passion, and unique perspectives, ultimately leading to a more enriching and purposeful life.

Remember, your feelings are valid, and by acknowledging them, you empower yourself to lead a more fulfilling, balanced, and emotionally vibrant life.

Rooting for you,

Chloé
